Microsoft Office 365 provides the Office programs via subscription plans. Office 365 is based on major Office versions, such as Office 2013 or Office 2016.
think-cell supports the "full, installed Office applications" available through most Office 365 subscription plans. (The "full, installed Office applications" are also commonly referred to by their installation method, "Click-to-Run"). Note that Office 365 Business Essentials and Office 365 Enterprise E1 do not include the "full, installed Office applications" and therefore cannot support Office COM Add-ins like think-cell.
Office 365 requires think-cell 7, which is also compatible with older Microsoft Windows and Office versions, including 32-bit and 64-bit versions. It is therefore recommended to install think-cell 7 regardless of which Windows or Office version you use. As always you can get think-cell 7 from our download web page.
Starting with Office 2016, Office 365 ProPlus defaults to the Deferred Channel (previously called Current Branch for Business), where updates are released with some delay. This is the update channel recommended by Microsoft if you use Office add-ins. For details please consult Microsoft's documentation for IT administrators, Overview of update channels for Office 365 ProPlus.
Please consult with your Microsoft Office support contact if you are in doubt whether your Office 365 plan uses the Deferred Channel.
These plans default to Microsoft's updates from the Current Channel. For details please consult Microsoft's documentation for IT administrators, Overview of update channels for Office 365 ProPlus. The Current Channel is expected to get updates every month and receives the newest Office features right away.
Due to the sometimes considerable changes Microsoft makes in the Current Channel it is typically required that your think-cell installation is up to date. If you use the Current Channel with automatic updates we therefore strongly recommend that you also leave think-cell's automatic updates and online quality assurance enabled, to allow us to provide a compatible version to you. You can also get the current version from our download web page.
Options to postpone updates are explained on Microsoft's Update Office 2013 or Office 365 support page.
By joining Microsoft's optional Office Insider or First Release programs, you will continuously receive Office updates in advance. A compatible think-cell version may not be immediately available. This channel should only be used for testing and if you do not require functional Office add-ins at all times. For productive work we recommend to stay in the regular Office update channels, as explained above.
As mentioned, Office 365 is based on major Office versions, such as Office 2013 or Office 2016. When Microsoft publishes a new major Office version, Office 365 will upgrade to this new version automatically. The timing of Office 365's upgrade from one major Office version to the next, and how to control it, depends on your subscription plan and update channel. When choosing a plan you should ensure that you keep control. Please refer to Microsoft's Office 365 support for the latest details, as they are being changed quite frequently.
For technical reasons it is not possible to provide a compatible version of think-cell immediately when a new major version of Microsoft Office becomes available. In the past, the work to adapt think-cell to a new version of Office typically required several months after general availability of the new Office version. We think that other add-ins that integrate deeply with Microsoft Office face the same constraints and generally make a compatible version available in a similar time frame.
Options to postpone a major version upgrade differ depending on your Office 365 plan and available update channels.
