In Microsoft Office 2010, you receive an error message mentioning 'KERNELBASE.DLL' and 'Office assertion'. Then Office crashes

Description

While you are working in Microsoft Office 2010, an error message similar to "KERNELBASE.DLL 6.1.7601.22436+0xc42d: Office assertion" appears at seemingly random times and is followed by a crash of Office.

Cause

This problem is caused by a bug in Microsoft Office 2010.

Solution

Install a Microsoft update for Office 2010, KB2837581. Microsoft released this update on July 8, 2014, and it is usually installed automatically. If it is missing on your computer, Office updates may have been deactivated by you or your company's IT.

You can download the update from Microsoft by going to KB2837581. You may need your IT's support to install it. Note that there are two different download links for the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Office 2010. Unfortunately, Microsoft's "Am I running 32-bit or 64-bit Office?" link on the KB2837581 page does not work anymore. You can find this information by clicking on PowerPointFileHelp. On the right, note the version information under About Microsoft PowerPoint: It shows (32-bit) or (64-bit).

Note that as a prerequisite this update requires that you have already installed either Microsoft Office 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Service Pack 2 (SP2). For complete update information please refer to KB2837581.
