KB0045: Excel does not open when double-clicking an Excel file

Cause

Under certain circumstances, an Excel setting gets switched on which prevents Excel from receiving commands from other applications. This also affects opening files on double-click.

Solution

1. Open Excel from the Windows Start menu
2. Select Tools → Options...
3. Go to the General tab
4. Make sure that Ignore other applications is not checked
